Top Netflix Shows Die-Hard Car Enthusiasts Should Stream

Your life of speed has come to a standstill now that the government has imposed the lockdown to mitigate the inevitable spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). To help tide you through these homebound times, we put together a list of our favourite car series that you can binge-watch on Netflix.

With a glut of car content available, the circuit breaker period might not be such a bad thing after all. So, stay home, sit back and chill.

APEX: THE STORY OF THE HYPERCAR

Hypercars might’ve been exalted for their rare and unobtainable nature but many don’t see them beyond their exoticism to understand how influenced our lives are by them.

Apex counts some of the industry’s most prominent voices, think Chris Harris, Christian von Koenigsegg and Horacio Pagani to shed light on these wild machines. It also follows the conceptualisation and production of hypercars like the Koenigsegg One:1 and Bugatti Veyron, while highlighting the industry’s paradigm shift towards balancing over-the-top performance with energy conservation.

CAR MASTERS: RUST TO RICHES

One of the best car shows out there right now, Car Masters has received hugely positive responses from the audience. The show is somewhat similar to ‘Inside West Coast Customs’, as in here too there is a garage called Gotham Garage where they bring in old, broken, almost unusable cars and car parts and transform them into super cool vehicles that would be anyone’s envy.

Mark Towle is the host of the show and at the beginning of the show, he gives an analogy of a boy who owned a paperclip. With clever planning and investment, he managed to transform that paperclip into a house. The cars which are bought by Gotham Garage are nothing more than five hundred to a thousand dollars, but they remodel it and manage to sell it for six-digit figures. There is a great friendship between the people working at the garage, which also keeps the audience connected to the show.

COMEDIANS IN CARS GETTING COFFEE

Another great creation from the genius mind of Jerry Seinfeld, Seinfeld invites some of the world’s most distinguished comedians to come on a ride with him in exclusive, rare mid-twentieth century cars which look right out of a Hollywood movie. In each episode of Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee, Seinfeld drives the cars himself while he explains the key features about them.

Some of the great names who have been on this show are Amy Schumer, David Letterman, Don Rickles, Jimmy Fallon, Kevin Hart, Larry David, Ricky Gervais, Sarah Silverman, Stephen Colbert and Tina Rey.

FORMULA ONE: DRIVE TO SURVIVE

Live life in the fast lane with Drive To Survive, a documentary series produced in collaboration between Netflix and Formula One to give an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the drivers and races of the 2018 and 2019 Formula One World Championships.

The series’ genius is to take a holistic approach, focusing on everything but the actual races itself. There is plenty of footage of memorable race moments, but it is what happens prior, between and after the cars hit the track that really tells the story of the sport.

HYPERDRIVE

An auto racing reality TV series produced by Charlize Theron, Hyperdrive is about 28 international elite street racers with heavily-modified drift taking on an assault course, with obstacles called things such as ‘walk on water’, ‘the leveller’ and ‘forced perspective’. In essence, it is basically a high-octane hybrid of Total Wipeout with Fast and Furious.

PAUL HOLLYWOOD’S BIG CONTINENTAL ROAD TRIP

In our humble opinion, Paul Hollywood’s Big Continental Road Trip is by far the most unique car-related series on Netflix as it has a different approach compared to the other shows on this list. The first thing that will raise your eyebrow is the fact that Paul Hollywood is a celebrity chef, but he is also an avid racing driver, having raced a series of Aston Martins from 2015.

The series features Hollywood travelling to three European countries to learn how cars and drivers align with their respective national cultures. Hollywood visited Italy, Germany, and France, so expect each episode to include some of the most iconic cars out there.

RUST VALLEY RESTORES

Rust Valley Restorers focuses on dreadlocked hoarder Mike Hall and his restoration business in Tappen, British Columbia – better known as Rust Valley. Hall has built up a collection of 400 crumbling classic cars, and using his life’s savings has founded a workshop to turn his collection into a business, with a ramshackle crew of helpers on hand to turn them from quite literal rust to optimistic riches.

WEST COAST CUSTOMS

West Coast Customs needs no introduction. The famous repair shop from Burbank, California, has been featured on TV for decades now and the series available on Netflix includes no fewer than six seasons. If you are into extreme mods, luxury features or simply watching the crew turn an ordinary car into a unique ride, this is the show you need to watch.

We may add a few more suggestions in the future, but these are probably enough to suffice for a month. In the meantime, do share your own best car programmes on Netflix in the comments section below!
