Top 10 Video Games for Car Enthusiasts

As Singapore progressively lifts the circuit breaker measures over three phases, the majority of us will still continue working from home for the foreseeable future. Unfortunately, this means we will not be given the green light to go on leisure drives or road trips anytime soon.

We are sure the majority of you miss the feeling of sitting in the driver’s seat. If the cabin fever has got you feeling those car withdrawal blues and itching to get back behind the wheel, fret not. Here are our top picks for video games for car enthusiasts that are sure to satisfy your need for speed!

1.  Gran Turismo Sport

Platform: PlayStation 4

Looking for the most true-to-life racing game that delivers a rich driving-simulation experience? Gran Turismo Sport is a good place to start. The Gran Turismo franchise has formed a cult following among car game enthusiasts over the years, but the 2017 installment, Gran Turismo Sport takes the cake.

Their latest instalment features over 300 cars, online play modes, over 30 different tracks, and plenty of different racing series to choose from. The sheer number of options has won over loyal fans and new players alike.

2. Super Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Platform: Nintendo Switch

Cult classic and destroyer of friendships, Super Mario Kart may not have the number of car options our other selections do, but what it lacks in customisation it more than makes up for in the number of modes, tracks, and replay value.

Their latest Nintendo Switch-only instalment is perfect for first-time racing gamers, which means you can get your circuit breaker housemates in on the fun too!

3. Forza Motorsport 7

Forza 7 Pit Crew

Platform: Xbox One, Microsoft Windows

Hailing from yet another popular racing game franchise, Forza Motorsport 7 is the latest in the series and is the most advanced and realistic of all the instalments in the franchise.

With stunning 4K graphics, an advanced physics system, over 800 cars from 99 manufacturers and 30 different circuits, it’ll be a challenge to find a racing junkie not a fan of this game.

4. DiRT Rally 2.0

Platform: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows

This one is for those who like a real challenge. Billed as the most authentic rally game ever made, DiRT Rally 2.0 is unforgiving and has a steep learning curve, but fans of the franchise swear that this is exactly what keeps them coming back for more.

Harsh terrains, unforgiving reaction times and a continuous rush of heart-racing adrenaline are just a few things to expect when you play this game. If you like something more rugged and aren’t afraid to crash (a lot), DiRT Rally 2.0 might be your perfect match.

5. Burnout Paradise Remastered

Platform: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 Pro, Xbox One X, PC

The remastered version of the 2008 smash hit Burnout Paradise includes all the features that made the original version so successful, and more.

Burnout Paradise Remastered features the beloved “race and destroy” mechanics that have players racing through traffic and crashing up a storm, as well as new 4K graphics, up to 8-person multiplayer, and all 8 main DLC content packages to the original version.

More content equals more fun, enough said.

6. F1 2019

Platform: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows

Real-life fans of this motorsport series are bound to enjoy this virtual version! Developed and published by Codemasters, the fully licensed F1 game is far more than just another racing game. It includes all of the 2019 season’s official teams, drivers (with the likes of Alexander Albon, George Russell, Lando Norris and more) and all 21 circuits.

You get to really do get to put yourself into the shoes of an F1 racer, forming rivalries and establishing your career until you win the championship.

7. iRacing

Platform: Microsoft Windows

Arguably the most realistic racing simulator to date, iRacing truly brings players the closest possible experience to actually getting into the driver’s seat. Every aspect of the game is meticulously modelled after its real-life counterpart, from the shine on every rim of the wheel to each stray blade of grass on the circuit.

Known for its intense racing rules and incredibly active community, this is one game that seriously competitive gamers ought to consider trying out.

8. Forza Horizon 4

Platforms: Xbox One, Microsoft Windows

This game is known for giving players a perfect balance between realism and fantasy. Players get to experience cars that feel uniquely different from one another, and put their skills to the test by driving through different terrain and seasonal weathers that affect your gameplay experience.

This fourth instalment sets players racing through the British Isles for a truly scenic journey, but the multitude of gameplay modes are sure to leave gamers fixed to their screens.

9. Trackmania 2: Canyon

Platform: Microsoft Windows

As its title suggests, the main focus of this game is its tracks. What sets it apart from other racing games is how convoluted, challenging, and sometimes downright ridiculous the tracks are. Expect to see terrifying jumps and your fair share of barrel rolls in any round, kind of like a grown-up Mario Kart.

In our opinion, the best feature is that players can even create their own weird and wacky track creations, which makes for some pretty hilarious gameplay.

10. Rocket League

Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, macOS, Microsoft Windows, Linux, Macintosh operating systems

Okay, this one is a little more whimsical than our other picks. Rocket League is where rocket-powered cars, giant footballs, and explosions come together. It is every bit as fantastical as it sounds, in the best possible way.

Engage in matches with up to 7 other players controlling cars trying to hit giant footballs into the opposing team’s goal. Oh, and whenever you make said goal, a giant explosion happens. What more could you possibly want?

There you go, 10 fantastic car games sure to keep your inner roadster happy till you get to drive your beloved car to your heart’s content again. For more car-related entertainment from the comfort of your home, be sure to check out our top Netflix recommendations for car junkies!
