The Most Popular Sedan Cars in Singapore

The popularity of sedans hasn’t really died down since the very first production cars rolled off the assembly plant. With the exception of performance brands like Ferrari or Lamborghini, most (if not all) car manufacturers would have a few sedans within their range. And more often than not, their flagship or most popular models are sedans as well.

Four doors, two rows of seating for 5, engine up front and a trunk in the rear. It’s a formula that has withstood the test of time and will continue to even as cars start to stray away from combustion engines. Here are a few of the most popular sedans in Singapore.

Toyota Corolla Altis

Practical, reliable, frugal, comfortable, compact but spacious. These are the attributes that make the Toyota Corolla Altis an attractive package. It’s not fast, it’s not overly exciting, but it is affordable and easy to drive.

And the latest facelifted version is no exception, with sleeker body lines and narrower headlamps. Plus, its improved CVT gearbox provides better gas mileage than the prior generations of Corollas.

Honda Civic

The Honda Civic has made waves since its introduction into Singapore years ago, with the 7th and 8th generation models getting rave reviews for its fuel efficiency and smooth ride. Now in its 10th iteration, the Civic maintains its good looks and its upgraded digital dashboard is a step up over its prior models.

And while the Civic no longer comes with 2.0L or 1.8L engines like its predecessors, its engine range has more than enough power for your daily commute. But if you want to take it up a notch, there’s always the 306-horsepower Civic Type-R.

Mazda 3

In its initial years, the original mid-sized Mazda was badged as Mazda 323 and they were a big hit. So big in fact, that the Singapore Police Force even used them as patrol cars.

Then came the first-generation Mazda 3, which attracted adults and younger drivers alike with its sporty design cues such as its headlights and alloy rims. Now in its 3rd generation, the facelifted Mazda 3 is even more eye-catching than its predecessors.

With the best premium interior in its segment and 18.1km/L of gas mileage, the Mazda 3 is a serious contender for being the best mid-sized sedan in its class.

Sales of BMWs have seen a sharp uptake in this last decade. From 20,434 registered cars in 2008 to more than 44,500 last year, with sedans being the most popular body style. Among which is the BMW 3 series, being the smallest sedan in their range and the most affordable.

With several different engine options ranging from the economical 318i to the sporty 340i (And M3), buyers wouldn’t be hard-pressed to find a 3 series that best suits their needs.

Mercedes-Benz CLA180

When the Mercedes CLA first came out in the market, it was an immediate hit with Singaporeans. With its sleek lines and frameless doors, it looks and drives like a sportier coupe.

Featuring a 1.6L engine and just a smidge under 130 horsepower, it sits comfortably within the CAT A vehicle class. That being said, it is no slouch by any means. Put your foot down and the car livens up, surging forward with surprising speed. And the new model with its updated interior is a genuine step up over an already brilliant car.
