2018 Jeep® Wrangler Sahara

The Jeep Wrangler is one of the most popular SUVs in the off-road scene. Beating its competitors for its off-road capabilities and well-loved for the iconic Jeep seven-slot grilles, it is no wonder that the Wrangler has become the face of Jeep over the last 30 years.

Today, we find out what makes the Jeep Wrangler the excellent off-road vehicle that it is.

For the longest time, off-road vehicles have used leaf springs as a suspension in the wheels. Leaf springs are sheets of metal that stack together and are attached to each wheel axle. These are made for supporting and carrying heavy loads on vehicles, but come at the cost of a really uncomfortable ride during normal daily usage.

Jeep introduced the Quadra-Coil 4-Link System in their Jeep Wrangler back in 1997. This served as a replacement for the traditional leaf springs. Instead of a rigid stack of metal sheets, the suspension uses a single metal that is coiled like a spring. Coil springs give an extra amount of compression and flexibility to the vehicle. Hence, they absorb shocks of any uneven pavement, while keeping the Jeep stable during normal circumstances.

There are primarily two types of axles that vehicles can choose to use – solid axles (also known as straight axles) and independent axles. Jeep Wranglers have been using solid axles since its introduction, and there are reasons for choosing to use them instead of independent axles.

For starters, solid axles are much easier to replace than independent axles, since it requires fewer parts to function. Additionally, solid axles are more durable than most independent axles as both wheels connect to the same metal housing. With lesser amounts of power being lost in transmission, more torque can be employed on the front and rear wheels.

Of course, what sets the Jeep Wrangler apart from other off-road SUVs is the customisability and after-market support provided. Tuning and modifying your Wrangler is, after all, a large after-market service! Jeep aims to supply different coil springs, straight axles, and shock absorbers tailored to any terrain that you will be driving on. You can find your nearest Jeep Service Centre in Singapore here.
