When it comes to safety on the road, crash protection starts with crash prevention. This is why car manufacturers like Toyota have invested so heavily into creating more advanced and more efficient technologies to make driving safer than ever.
Introducing Toyota Safety Sense (TSS)
TSS is the product of Toyota’s pledge to drivers to maintain the highest level of safety. The innovative bundle of active safety features included on many of Toyota’s vehicles at no additional cost is a carely curated package of cutting edge safety features and technologies that keep drivers safer than ever.
The TSS is currently in its second generation, which includes a number of added features since its first version. TSS 2.0 covers the three most common accident types: frontal collisions, unintended lane departures, and nighttime accidents.
Pre-collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS)
The PCS system utilises an integrated forward-facing camera and grille-mounted radar system to reduce the likelihood of or avoid a collision with a preceding vehicle or pedestrian.
An audio and visual alert is triggered when the PCS system detects a high possibility of a frontal collision, and the system may automatically apply the brakes to avoid the collision.
Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC)
DRCC detects a veh automatically adjusts the speed of the vehicle to maintain a preset distance behind the vehicle in front. If DRCC assesses that the vehicle needs to slow down even more, an audio and visual alert will be triggered.
When the preceding vehicle is no longer driving slower than your set speed, DRCC will automatically accelerate back to your set speed.
DRCC is also available as Full-speed Range DRCC for automatic transmission. Full-speed Range DRCC is designed to operate between 0-177 km/h, allowing low-speed following, matching speed and, under certain conditions, halting before potential collisions.
Unintended Lane Departures
Lane Departure Alert (LDA)
The LDA system prevents drivers from unintentionally exiting their lane by using an in-vehicle camera to detect lane departure when travelling on straight roads with clear lane markings. The LDA status is displayed as coloured lane marking illustrations on the Multi-Information Display (MID).
If LDA determines that the car is unintentionally deviating from the lane, an audio and visual alert will be sent to the driver.
Lane Tracing Assist
Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) is designed to reduce strain on drivers especially during traffic jams. When Full-Speed Range DRCC is activated, and there are visible lane markers, LTA detects the lane markers and preceding vehicles to keep the vehicle centered and within its lane.
The driver may also monitor the current position of the vehicle through the LTA display on the MID.
Automatic High Beams (AHB)
Designed to help the driver achieve better visibility during the night while reducing glare for other drivers, AHB utilities an in-vehicle camera to detect the headlights of oncoming vehicles and taillights of preceding vehicles. AHB then switches between high and low beams to accommodate.
The more frequent use of high beams allows for earlier detection of obstacles and pedestrians, while allowing the driver to keep both hands on the steering wheel as the need to manually adjust the headlights is eliminated.
Road Sign Assist (RSA)
Road Sign Assist utilises a forward-facing intelligent camera to detect and read road signs such as speed limits, no entry signs, stop signs, and yield signs. The signs are then displayed on the MID.
This feature is particularly helpful to drivers with visual impairments or general night blindness.
Always a Better Way
Toyota stays true to their brand philosophy with the TSS package. The second generation has been improved to provide more protection to pedestrians as well as increase driver awareness.
The brand does not plan on stopping here though. Toyota has confirmed that they plan to continue upgrading TSS in the future with even more safety features as technology advances.
