If you find yourself wishing you could live the life of your favourite K-drama character, you are not alone. While you might not be able to actually step into their shoes, you can step into the driver’s seat!
Top Korean car manufacturer Hyundai has made some of the hottest cars in K-dramas that sparked a nationwide demand for these vehicles. Read on to find out which Hyundai cars were in your favourite Korean dramas.
Hyundai Tucson (Descendants of the Sun)
In the immensely popular K-Drama Descendants of the Sun, swoon-worthy male lead Captain Yoo Si-jin is a responsible, cool leader of a Special Forces Unit known as the Alpha team. His vehicle of choice throughout the series perfectly reflects his character, and is none other than the Hyundai Tucson. The Tucson SUV is suave, practical, and ready for adventure, just like Captain Yoo.
Hyundai’s Tucson crossover SUV is a true all-rounder, and is perfect for families. Just like Captain Yoo, this vehicle prioritises protecting your loved ones. It has extensive safety features such as a 6-airbag system, increased use of Advanced High Strength Steel, and Blind-Spot Collision Avoidance Warning (BSW).
For its excellence in safety, the Tucson has received a Euro NCAP 5 star rating, and was a 2019 IIHS Top Safety Pick Award winner.
The Tucson is not all for work and no play, however. It boasts an impressive 7-speed Double clutch transmission (DCT) system with 1.6 T-GDi, giving both superior performance and reliability.
Hyundai Genesis (Descendants of the Sun)
The gripping romance between the main couple captivated viewers worldwide and propelled the series to K-drama legend status. However, no scene was quite as powerful as the famous self-driving car kiss scene between supporting couple Jin-goo and Kim Ji-won.
The scene shows Jin Goo activating the Lane Keep Assist (LKA) and Smart Cruise Control (SCC) function on the Genesis’ touchscreen display, then taking his eyes off the road to gaze into those of Ji-won’s, while taking his hands off the steering wheel to tenderly grab her hand. The camera then zooms out to show the coupe effortlessly cruise unassisted down the bustling road while the happy couple kiss.
The LKA system, part of Hyundai’s Smart Sense Safety Technology package, detects when the vehicle is drifting out of its lane and automatically adjusts itself to stay on track, while the SCC function utilises a radar on the front of the vehicle which measures the distance between the car and anything in front of it and adjusts the speed of the car to maintain a safe distance.
Hyundai NEXO (Designated Survivor: 60 Days)
Recent smash hit Designated Survivor: 60 Days tells the story of university professor-turned-Minister of Environment Park Mu-jin’s struggle acclimating to his newfound role as Acting President after an explosion kills his predecessor and the remaining members of the cabinet.
Park is incredibly eco-conscious, going as far as arguing with the previous president about Korea’s diesel fuel emission standards. It only makes sense that his vehicle of choice is the Hyundai Nexo, the world’s only fuel-cell technology vehicle.
The NEXO is not like any other electric vehicle though. The hydrogen fuel-cell powered car not only produces zero fuel emissions, it also purifies the air instead of polluting it. The NEXO also comes with several safety and technology upgrades, including the Remote Smart Parking Assist feature that Park uses in one episode.
Hyundai Palisade (Vagabond)
Thriller-drama Vagabond starring Lee Seung-gi and Suzy Bae has viewers always sitting on the edge of their seats with the amount of suspense and action packed into every episode. In one episode, we see the main cast in an exciting car chase, weaving through heavy traffic while being shot at by their pursuers.
The car the company chooses to ride in through this pursuit is none other than the sturdy and stylish Hyundai Palisade.
The Palisade combines luxury and practicality. As Hyundai’s largest 3-row SUV, it is not only extremely spacious, with 8 seats and plush interior, but comes with many of Hyundai’s famed safety features. The 8-inch touchscreen infotainment display and second-row USB charging points ensure that every trip in the vehicle is an enjoyable one.
Hyundai Kona (Bride of the Water God)
Touching romance drama Bride of the Water God features a star-studded cast of extremely beautiful actors including the likes of Shin Se-kyung, Nam Joo-hyuk, and Krystal Jung. The entire series surrounding gorgeous immortal beings dazzled viewers with its impeccable styling.
This extends to cars too, as the stylish Hyundai Kona is the vehicle of choice for immortal water god Habaek.
The five-door subcompact crossover SUV features an easy-to-use infotainment system, quality materials for its interior, and composed handling. The latest Kona even comes in an EV option for environmentally-conscious drivers.
Hyundai Grandeur/Azera (Legend of the Blue Sea)
K-drama hit series Legend of the Blue Sea features Jun Ji-hye and Lee Min-ho as reincarnated lovers. Lee Min-ho plays Dam-cheong, a rich businessman’s son, who turns into a wealthy con-artist using his wit, charm, and good looks to make a living.
In keeping with his affluent image, Dam-cheong chooses to travel in style in the Hyundai Grandeur, also known as the Azera in international markets. This vehicle has since undergone a major facelift and upgrade for 2020.
The 2020 flagship has received a brand-new intricate front grille with light-up elements, an upgraded interior, and a plethora of other features such as a panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats, and a 12-speaker JBL sound system.
Hyundai: The Hallyu Choice for Cars
Hyundai remains the car manufacturer of choice in the K-drama industry, and it’s easy to see why. Not only do they have vehicles for every occasion, but their excellence in safety, performance, and style shine as bright as any K-drama star.
If you’re looking for somewhere to buy a Hyundai car worthy of your inner K-drama star, look no further than RTMT Motor as they have a variety of “daebak” (amazing) Hyundai vehicles that suit your every need.
